Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a procedure designed to reduce excess breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia is a condition where the breast tissue becomes enlarged, which can cause discomfort and self-consciousness. The surgery aims to correct this condition and restore a more masculine chest contour.
Gynecomastia surgery can effectively address enlarged breast tissue in men, leading to improved appearance and increased confidence.
Hormonal Imbalance: The most common cause is an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels, which can occur during puberty, aging, or due to certain medical conditions.
Medications: Some medications, including steroids, anti-androgens, and certain antidepressants, can cause gynecomastia.
Health Conditions: Conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, and tumors can also contribute to breast enlargement.
Substance Use: Alcohol, marijuana, and anabolic steroids may play a role in the development of gynecomastia.
Liposuction
Procedure: Used to remove excess fat from the chest area. It’s typically performed when gynecomastia is primarily due to excess fatty tissue rather than glandular tissue.
Excision Surgery
Procedure: Involves removing excess glandular tissue and sometimes excess skin. This is often necessary when gynecomastia is due to glandular tissue rather than just fat.
A combination of liposuction and excision may be performed to achieve optimal results, especially in cases where both excess fat and glandular tissue are present.
Surgical Approach: The chosen technique will be based on the amount and type of tissue to be removed. It may be staged if patient has too much skin excess and need a lift as well.
Immediate Post-Op: Expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain management will be provided.
Initial Recovery: Most people can return to light activities within a few days to a week. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few weeks.
Long-Term Recovery: Full recovery may take several months. Follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor healing and ensure the desired outcome.
Aesthetic Results: The final appearance may take time to fully develop as swelling subsides. There may be some residual swelling and contour irregularities initially.
Psychological Impact: Many individuals experience significant improvement in self-esteem and body image following successful surgery.
During the consultation, Dr. Mary Kim can provide personalized advice, evaluate your condition, and discuss your goals and expectations. She will ensure you have a clear understanding of the procedure, potential risks, recovery process, and expected outcomes before proceeding with surgery.
