Breast Implant Revision Surgery
Breast implant revision surgery, also known as breast revision surgery, is a procedure performed to address issues or make changes related to existing breast implants. This type of surgery can be undertaken for various reasons, including complications, dissatisfaction with the results, or a desire to update the implants.
Complications: Common complications that may necessitate revision surgery include:
Capsular Contracture: The formation of scar tissue around the implant that can cause hardness and distortion.
Implant Rupture or Leakage: If an implant leaks or ruptures, it may need to be replaced or removed.
Implant Shifting: Implants may move from their original position, causing asymmetry or aesthetic issues.
Infection: Infections that do not resolve with medication might require surgical intervention.
Aesthetic Concerns: If the initial surgery did not achieve the desired look, or if changes in the breasts occur over time (e.g., due to aging, weight changes, or pregnancy), revision surgery may be performed to adjust the size, shape, or placement of the implants.
Desire for Change: Some individuals choose revision surgery to switch from saline to silicone implants, change the size of the implants, or update to a more recent implant technology.
Implant Replacement: The existing implants are removed and replaced with new ones. This may involve changing the type, size, or placement of the implants.
Capsulectomy: The removal of the capsule of scar tissue around the implant, often performed in conjunction with implant replacement if capsular contracture is present.
Implant Removal: If a patient chooses to remove the implants without replacement, the procedure involves removing the implants and potentially addressing changes to the breast shape with a lift or other reconstructive techniques.
Placement Adjustments: This may involve repositioning the implants (e.g., from subglandular to submuscular placement) to address issues like implant shifting or to improve the aesthetic outcome.
Immediate Post-Op: Expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain management will be provided.
Initial Recovery: Many patients return to light activities within a week or two. Avoid strenuous activities for several weeks.
Long-Term Recovery: Full healing and the final results may take several months to become apparent.
During your consultation, Dr. Kim will evaluate your specific situation, discuss your goals and options, and create a tailored surgical plan. She will also address any concerns related to potential risks and the expected outcomes.
Breast implant revision surgery can be an effective way to address complications or improve the aesthetic results of previous breast augmentation, but it’s important to have a clear understanding of the process and its implications before proceeding.
